The course comprises a short theoretical part on the basic principles of public speaking and a longer practical part on the analysis and presentation of speeches in the English language. Emphasis is given to the dialogic nature of public speaking, the contribution of the audience, the characteristics of oral versus written language and of the genre of public speaking. The course analyzes the strategies speakers use to draw the attention of the audience, to support arguments, build credibility, become clearly understood and pleasant to their listeners. The students of this course are to understand the importance of public speaking, learn how to recognize the type of strategies commonly employed by successful speakers and make their own in class presentations in English with the instructor’s guidance.

The course is intended to examine the history of Hellenic Greek poetry, starting from the epic of Digenis Akritis (10th century) and ending with the poetry of the “generation of K.G. Karyotakis”, thus approximately at the end of the third decade of the 20th century.

In this course we study issues relating to the second postwar poetic generation. The poets are turning to traditional literary themes such as loneliness , death, alienation, love, time and human responsibility, trying to convey the anguish of the postwar man. The study of the second postwar poetic generation is supported by the discussion about the development, the renewal and the overthrow of the characteristics of the poetry of mourning during the 20th and 21st century. The prosody of death is expressed by irony, metonymy, ambiguity, elliptical speech, use of antithetic concepts, and by the subversion of the established rules of syntax and grammar. The poetry and the poetics of Kiki Dimoula –from the early collection of Έρεβος (1956) to Τα εύρετρα (2010) are in particular interest in the light of a continuous process of mourning.
Her poetry laments the ephemeral human existence, the decay of time, the catalytic dominion of death, creating the sense – as it has been said – that the common fate of mortals had addressed only Kiki Dimoula. Dimoula’s poetry is distinguishable because of its elegiac tonality that expresses creatively the poetry of mourning, the poetry of loss.

The course introduces students to the scientific study of language, linguistics. After a brief overview of the history of the discipline, the goals and methodology of contemporary theoretical linguistics are presented. The different levels of linguistic analysis are discussed one by one: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics.

The course follows up on Introduction to Linguistics I, offering a broader pespective on the scientific study of language. On the one hand, we address topics such as language typology, the relation between oral and written language, writing systems, and language change. On the other hand, we devote particular attention to interdisciplinary approaches to language (Sociolinguistics, Neurolingustics, Psycholinguistics, Clinical Linguistics).

Familiarisation with language structures and concepts of English academic and specialized terminology in the discipline of Philology. The teaching material used covers the following areas: literary analysis, Ancient Greek comedy, Ancient Greek tragedy, women’s role in antiquity, poetry, etc. In addition, students practice the use of a number of grammatical and syntactic features commonly used in this field, including: reported speech, emphatic structures, comparative adjectives, prepositions, etc. as well as the basic writing skills relating to paragraph and summary writing.
