Virtual Reality

Spyridon Vosinakis - Undergraduate - (A+)
Department of Product and Systems Design Engineering, Aegean University

The course presents the general concepts, the taxonomy and the applications of Virtual Reality Systems. It also analyses the models of environment representation and the possible metaphors that can be used for user’s interaction with the virtual world. The animation techniques that can be used for real-time motion of objects and actors are presented, while issues of physically based modeling and collision detection and response, that are necessary in believable virtual environments are introduced. The autonomous synthetic characters and the relevant technology is analyzed, while there is a detailed presentation of virtual reality hardware, such as data gloves and head mounted displays. Finally, special emphasis is given in design and evaluation methods, in metaphor and interaction design, as well as in development methods. The Open Simulator environment and the LSL language are presented and the students use it in the laboratories to design and implement a virtual world and the respective user interactions

Environmental Meteorology and Air Quality Models

Dionysia Kolokotsa - undergraduate - (A+)
School of Environmental Engineering, Technical University of Crete

This course general data for the earth's atmosphere are presented and discussed involving an environmental engineer. The earth's energy balance is analyzed in combination with the greenhouse effect. Particular emphasis is placed on thermodynamic processes of the atmospheric air and on the governing equations of the movement of air masses in the atmospheric boundary layer. Furthermore, atmospheric statistic analysis is presented as well as the analysis of weather systems.

engineering subject

Building energy consumption evaluation

Dionysia Kolokotsa - undergraduate - (A-)
School of Environmental Engineering, Technical University of Crete

Fundamentals objectives and benefits of the building energy audit. Introduction to energy regulations. Systems and instrumentation for the building energy audit. Design and installation of energy monitoring networks, fault detection and maintance. Assessment and design of the building envelope, the electrical installation and HVAC systems.

engineering subject

Environmental Geotechnics

Marina Pantazidou - Undergraduate - (A-)
School of Civil Engineering, National Technical University of Athens

The object of Environmental Geotechnics is the protection of the subsurface (soil and groundwater) from potential pollutants related primarily to waste management (e.g. landfills) and to transporting, storing and handling toxic raw materials (e.g. petroleum products, solvents). The course aims to promote (a) comprehension of the main processes that govern the spreading of pollution and its containment, (b) judicious application of the equations describing these processes and (c) familiarization with case studies of contaminated sites. A case study of contamination and remediation evolves in time and in space. To this end, the course first and foremost aims to highlight the temporal scale (several years to decades) and the spatial scale of these cases (tens to hundreds of meters, even a few kilometers when multiple neighboring pollution sources exist). Meanwhile, the course covers background necessary to assess the severity of pollution and gives a sense of when a contaminated site is a “difficult” one to remediate.

Measurements Technology II

Maria Goula - Undergraduate - (A+)
Department of Environment and Pollution Control Engineering, TEI of Western Macedonia

The course (theory and laboratory) Measurements Technology II seeks to help students understand and practical familiarize with modern, instrumental analysis techniques for the chemical characterization of materials, which includes determining the qualitative and the quantitative composition of a chemical system. Lectures include the most commonly used techniques of instrumental analysis, such as spectroscopic, chromatographic and special analysis techniques. The courses provide students with the theoretical background to understand the operating principles, methodology and application of appropriate techniques. In all chapters the required instrumentation is also studied in order to to facilitate the understanding of the operation of instruments used and to better exploit their applications. The essential goal is to inform and familiarize students with the basic processes and technologies, which they will face in the future in their working environment.
