Objectives

Αt the end of the course the student should have a good insight of: • The organization and function of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. • The mechanisms of organization and transfer of the genetic information. • The basic organization and function of plants. • The basic organization and function of animals. Also, the student will have further developed the following skills/competences: • Working safely in biological laboratories • Good knowledge of the equipment and systems used in biological laboratories.

• There are no prerequisite courses.


Syllabus

Introduction to Biology is offered in the Winter semester. The course is mandatory for the first year students and provides 3 ECTS. 1. Overview of Life. 2. Overview of cells and viruses. 3. Overview of membranous systems. 4. Mitochondrion. 5. Chloroplast. 6. Cytoskeleton. 7. Nucleus. 8. Introduction to cellular biochemistry. 9. Flow and transfer of genetic information. 10. Mendelism. 11. Evolution. 12. General introduction to Botany. 13. General introduction to Zoology.
