General Physics

The basic principles and laws of the electromagnetism are presented in this undergraduate course. The electric charge, force and field are studied in detail. The electric potential and the energy are also extensively described. The electric current is defined and complete analysis of the electric circuits is done. The magnetic field and forces are studied, while the relation between the electric current and the magnetic field is described. The electromagnetic Induction and its applications are discussed. The alternative electric current and RLC circuits are presented. Finally the Maxwell’s equations and the electromagnetic waves and spectrum are studied.

Objectives

Students should learn and evaluate the contribution of electromagnetism to our modern technological civilization. This will be done by understanding how the basic principles and laws of electromagnetism apply on simple electric devices, but also on more complex ones such as mass spectrometers, oscilloscopes, computers etc. For instance by pressing any key on a pc keyboard, a number of electromagnetic phenomena take place, which students must be aware in order to appreciate the value of electromagnetism in the development of computer science.
