The course introduces students to the scientific study of language, linguistics. After a brief overview of the history of the discipline, the goals and methodology of contemporary theoretical linguistics are presented. The different levels of linguistic analysis are discussed one by one: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics.
By completion of the course, students will be able to: - describe the aims, basic principles and sub-fields of linguistics as well as the levels of analysis of language, - understand and describe basic concepts of all levels of analysis and the relationship between them, - describe and analyze language data (i.e. sounds, words, phrases, sentences) phonologically, morphologically, syntactically, semantically and pragmatically.
No prior knowledge is required.
