Εnvironmental Μicrobiology


The Microbiology is the science that deals with the study of microorganisms, a large group of microscopic organisms. The microbiology is one of the most important biological sciences since: (a) provide useful tools for examining the phenomena of life, and (b) deals with solving important problems, and (c) the implementation of applications in medical, environmental, agriculture, and industry. Some of the most widespread diseases of humans, animals, and plants caused by microorganisms. Also contributing to the preservation of the natural environment and protection from adverse effects of human activities.


Objectives

At the end of the course the student should have acquired the bases in order to perceive what is going on specialized topics of Environmental Microbiology.


Prerequisites

There are no prerequisite courses.


Syllabus

Introduction. Microbial Ecology. Influence of abiotic factors on microbial communities. Microbial populations. Quantitative Microbial Ecology. The biogeochemical cycles of carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, iron, manganese, calcium and silicon.
