Αncient Greek Literature

The course focuses on exploring two interrelated literary genres , the epic and tragedy, history, sources and their reception in antiquity and today. During the first half of the semester addressing the different categories of the epic ( heroic viosofiko , religious ) sources , the surviving texts, problems and new approaches to the saga, especially in the Homeric epics. Then investigates the tragedy as a creation of urban literature, its relationship with the epic and its place in the political and social reality of the 5th century . B.C. We will refer to works by each of the surviving tragedians, Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course the student / student will be able to: - Know the history of literature . - Identify the different types of ancient Greek literature. - Identify key research problems and methodological limitations regarding the study of the Epic and Tragedy . - Identify internal and external information sources for the Epic . - Analyze the modern literature studies on the Epic . - To identify the relationships and epic tragedy - Understand the different aspects of the ancient Greek theater and especially of Tragedy (religious, social, political) . - To express informed opinions about the effect of the species in their era and today.
