Intervention and Treatment in Speech and Language Pathology


In this course students come first in contact with the process of therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation to children and adults with communication disorders. In particular, the course introduces students to the methods of analysis of the evaluation/diagnosis and the formulation of goal setting and organization of the plan of slt intervention, a large number of speech and language disorders, such as articulatory and phonological disorders, developmental language disorders, learning disabilities, fluency disorders, voice disorders, hearing, swallowing the adult acquired neurogenic disorders (aphasia, apraxia, dysarthria). Reference is made to basic therapeutic methods in clinical and counseling skills of the therapist (therapist-patient relationships and clinical secrecy). Also, refer to multidisciplinary approach / intervention to patients and holistic rehabilitation method. Also it is described how to write the evaluation report and the progress of the patient (SOAP).


Objectives

Collects information about the patient from the pathologist history from other disciplines and from the results of the evaluation. Analyze the results of the evaluation. Formulates Long Term and short-term treatment goals. Organizes therapeutic rehabilitation programs for specific communication disorders in children and adults. Written evaluation reports and progress of the patient. Monitor the effectiveness of treatment.


Prerequisites

Non pre-requisite knowledge is needed.


Syllabus

Key components of the language system. Reference to linguistic areas phonology, morphology, semantics, syntax and pragmatics. Theoretical presentation of specific speech-communication disorders in children-adults. Analysis of the nature, characteristics and etiology of a number of disorders. Interpretation of various models / methods therapeutic approach to these disorders. Basic principles and strategies targeting the therapeutic intervention. Individual-group therapy. Concepts of early intervention and counseling for speech therapists. Technical advisory in communicative disorders.
