Fluency Disorders – Stuttering


This course aims to introduce students to the study of the fluency disorders with emphasis on stuttering. Students will have a comprehensive understanding of theoretical approaches of fluency mechanism and differentiation and the boundary between people with normal dysrhythmias. Also the role that heredity, developmental and environmental effects on stuttering behavior. Final aim of the course is students to understand the importance of managing fluency disorders based on scientific evidence (evidence based clinical practice).


Objectives

Understand the nature of fluency disorders and their causes. Acquire skills to interpret fluency disorders through diagnostic approaches available in the literature for preschool and school age, adolescents and adults. To manage techniques and treatment methods depending on clinical situations and focusing having as axon age periods. Acquire critical thinking and flexibility and inventiveness to the aid diagnostic strategies, management, and treatment of people with flow disturbances.


Prerequisites

Non pre-requisite knowledge is needed.

Nature of fluency disorders Theories and cause of fluency disorders The characteristics of fluency disorders (with emphasis on stuttering) To understand: Physiological dysrhythmias, Borderline stuttering, Mild stuttering, Moderate stuttering, Severe stuttering, Very severe stuttering The conditions of assessment and diagnostic approaches of fluency disorders (by age) The conditions of treatment and diagnostic approaches of fluency disorders (by age: preschool age, school age, adolescents and adults) Other disorders associated with fluency (neurogenic fluency disorders, psychogenic fluency disorders, cluttering)
