The cultivation, production, processing and marketing of vine products is one of the major activities of agricultural production. This course describes and analyzes the basic principles of vine growing technique. Principles of vine biology are presented and the conditions for the successful establishment of a vineyard are analyzed. Issues related to the proliferation of vine cultivation are analyzed and interventions for effective management of the vineyard are discussed. The most important grape varieties grown in our country and the major pests and diseases are discussed.


Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Know the morphology of the vine and how this affects the viticultural technique. 2. Evaluate the impact of the environment on vine cultivation 3. Know the principles and practical applications of viticulture 4. know the vine propagation (grafting technique, rootstocks, varieties) 5. Know the requirements for the successful vineyard establishment 6. Know the major pests and diseases of the vine 7. Understand the importance of cultivation procedures in the quantity and quality of the vineyard products.
