Health Education


During this course are presented the essential knowledges a teacher mast have to promote health and health education of his students, and the basic knowledges concerning his personal health: common infectious diseases, prevention methods- vaccinations, basic of sexual education, relation between Nutrition and Health, Mediterranean nutrition pyramid.


Objectives

This course aims to the familiarisation of the students with the biological sciences that study agents influencing good health in childhood and youth. The essential knowledges about prevention of infectious diseases in school environment and vaccination program, as well as principles of healthy nutrition are provided, in order to prepare the teachers for their contribution to their pupils' health.

Syllabus

Infectious Diseases, Introduction, infection agents, bacterial and viral diseases in childhood, frequent infections and endemics in nursery and school environment, functions of the immune system, essentials of vaccinations, National vaccination program. Female and male genital system, Sexually transmitted diseases- definition, ways of transmission, frequent sexually transmitted diseases and their complications, prevention strategies. Family planning, contraception, Genetic counseling and antenatal diagnosis. The notion of metabolism. Macronutrients, Carbohydrates, Fats, Proteins, Micronutrients, Vitamins, Minerals. Nutrition in infancy and childhood, Breast feeding, Obesity, Diabetes mellitus, Atherosclerosis, Prevention of aging-associated diseases, Mediterranean diet as a cultural model for healthy eating.
