Types and Forms of Musical Theatre from 16th to 20th Century.


The course examines the creation and the development of musical theatre, in particular Opera, which is the most basic form of musical theatre, perhaps from 1600 (time in which Opera is born and formatted as a genre) to 20th century. In particular the course examines the principles of Opera, her reduction in ancient Greek tragedy, her basic structural elements (music, acting, text, dance), the most important periods in the history of Opera and the representative composers who contributed to her evolution and acne. The course is supported by the analysis and presentation of audiovisual material.


Objectives

The aim of this course is to enable students to : 1. recognize the periods of musical theatre 2. familiarize them with the kind of opera, the principles and the key structural features of Opera 3. acquaint then with the birth and blooming of opera in Italy , France , England and Germany 4. familiarize them with the most representative composers in the history of Opera.

Prerequisite knowledge is not needed.

From opera to musical. •Opera in the 20th century in Europe and America. Rock Opera.
