Introduction to visual arts


During the course it is attempted to present the art within the historical and social context, while its dependence on developments in the use of materials (canvas instead of wood in painting) is also demonstrated.


Objectives

At the end of the course the student will be able to: 1. understand the relations of point, line, plane and solid. 2. Know the details of the painting code. 3. Know the basics of sculpture and architectural structure. 4. Distinguish the terms: prehistoric, primitive, medieval, Renaissance, Classical, Classicism, Neo-classicism, modernism and the historical conditions of their formation. 5. Distinguish the basic styles: Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque, Mannerism, Rococo. 6. Know authors and artworks. 7. Know the basic bibliography covering different eras of art history. At the end of the course the student will have developed the following skills: 1. he/she will have acquired an overview of the historical path of art from cave paintings to the emergence of modernism. 2. he/she will be able to identify terms and styles. 3. he/she will be able to handle with the basic bibliography.


Prerequisites

The successful examination of this course is presupposed for registration on any other relevant lesson of the history of art of the 2nd, 3rd, 4th year.


Syllabus

The course covers the period from "art" of cave people-hunters until the first appearances of urban artistic movements in the century of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution. It is structured around the basic concepts of painting, sculpture and architectural art and is supported by visual material.
