Introduction to Information and Communication Technologies


The purpose of this course is to equip students with knowledge related to basic concepts of information technology, to develop skills in using a computer system and basic applications related to the processing and transmission of data, as well as to familiarize themselves with the Information Technologies and Communications.


Objectives

The goals of the course are: (a) to encourage students to use Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) confidently and in a meaningful way for them; (b) to develop students’ ability to use information sources and ICT tools effectively to help them retrieve, investigate, develop, analyse, exchange and compose diverse forms of information and to support their problem solving, exploratory and expressive work; (c) to educate students to make reasoned judgements about when and how to apply aspects of ICT to achieve maximum usefulness; (d) to help students to develop understanding of the ICT effects to learning, working life and society.


Prerequisites

For attending and understanding the course "Introduction to Web Science" there are no prerequisites courses.


Syllabus

Content: The course focuses on the aspect of information processing through ICT. The computer as a system: basic IT concepts (data and information representation and processing data), a description of the computer architecture (material, structure and operation of a computer, peripherals, supplies and software categories). The computer as a tool: key concepts and basic applications functions (operating system, programming languages, office applications, communication applications etc.). The computer in society: overview and critical evaluation of IT applications in the modern world, with references to hypermedia and multimedia technology and Cyberspace. Investigation of the current practice of introduction of ICT in Education. Introduction to Human Computer Communication
