History of Ancient Greek Art IΙ


This course provides an overview to classical and Hellenistic Greece. The marble sculptures and Bronzes from temples and other buildings form the centre of the course from the classical moment to the Hellenistic art. Also we shall be looking at architectural characteristics or trends, at individuals works of classical and Hellenistic painting and vase painting.


Objectives

To understand Students Fifth and Fourth centuries styles in Greek Art. Also to introduce the Hellenistic World to students. It looks at several “Hellenistic” artistic developments and finally it turns to the characteristic themes of Hellenistic iconography.

Syllabus

• Early classical art: architectural marbles, Bronze statuary, the revolution in Painting, The Temple of Zeus at Olympia. • The classical moment [The Parthenon and Pheidias, Polykleitos, Kresilas, Other names and works in sculpture] • Developments in the fourth century [Kephisodotos and Praxiteles, other works and names in sculpture, portraits, painters and vase painting. • Grave and votive reliefs, Lysippos and his pupils, Apelles and other painters • Hellenistic art: Portraiture, sculpture in Pergamon and Hellenistic baroque, other trends in sculpture, painting and mosaic.
