Audiology

The students should have at the end of the semester a good understanding of the auditory pathway, the hearing mechanism, and the main diseases associated with it, and all modern diagnostic methods for the detection of hearing impairment. The course aims to give students the necessary knowledge about the function of hearing and its relationship to the development of speech disorders of the auditory system and modern methods such diagnosis and management in neonates, infants and adults.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to perform basic diagnostic audiologic tests and interpret these results in clinical practice in spectrum of speech and language development.

Prerequisites

Non pre-requisite knowledge is needed.

Syllabus

Diagnosis of hearing impairment with tonal audiometry, tympanometry, vocal audiometry, screening hearing with otoacoustic emissions and acoustic evoked potentials of the brainstem, differential diagnosis of peripheral, central and functional disorders of hearing. Prevention of deafness and hearing conservation. Description of the main otological and audiology diseases associated with problems in the development of speech and language in neonates, infants, children and adults.
