Turkey in the 20th Century


This course examines the political system of Turkey from the establishment of the Kemalist regime at the beginning of the 1920's to modern era. It will focus on the analysis of the role of the army through the three coup-de-etas of 1960, 1971 and 1980 as well as the influence of political ideologies like Panturkism and Islamism on the political scene of modern Turkey

Syllabus

First of all explores the influence of the Ottoman Empires legacy on the nation-building process of the modern Turkey. Secondly, studies the influence of major institutions such as the kemalist ideology, the Turkish army and the religion (Islam) in the political system. Thirdly, explores issues related to ultranationalist right, non-turkish minorities etc. Fourthly, examines the role of the Turkish media in Turkey. Fifthly, studies the Turkish political system and the parliamentary elections. Finally, studies the development of the Turkish economy since the establishment of the kemalist state.
