General Phytopathology Theory


The aim of this course is the students via teaching methodologies applied and knowledge provided to recognize easily the pathogen and its caused damages to crop plants and afterwards to implement the appropriate control methods in relation with conventional and integrated management of crop production.


Objectives

After successful attendance of this course, the student have to: i) obtain the basic knowledge of phytopathology, ii) be familiar with the plant disease definition, morphology, biology and taxonomy of the most important plant pathogens (fungi, bacteria, viruses, mycoplasmata, rikketsias, parasitic plants), pathogenesis, epidemiology, symptoms, plant diseases diagnosis and most important control methods.


Prerequisites

No other course knowledge is necessary.


Syllabus

Basic knowledge, scope, aim, history and significance of Phytopathology. Meaning of plant disease and other phytopathological definitions. Etiology, symptoms, appropriate conditions for plant diseases (pathogenesis). Most important plant pathogens: fungi, bacteria, phytoplasmatas, mycoplasmatas, rikketsias, viruses, viroids, parasitic plants (morphological characteristics, bioecology). Most important plant diseases and their control methods (fungal diseases, bacterial diseases, viral diseases). Non-parasitic plant diseases (effect of harsh conditions of temperature, moisture, nutrition-toxic environmental factors). Plant diseases diagnosis at the field and laboratory. Morphology and taxinomy of fungi. Means and methods of controlling plant diseases.
