Educational Assessment


The current course context includes a number of topics concerning educational Assessment and the evaluation of student performance. It also focuses on topics like the functions, various forms and criteria of assessing children’s performance, the advantages and disadvantages of applying grades and tests, and alternative forms of assessing children.


Objectives

This course attempts to teach the role, the functions and the socioeconomical interdependencies of the educational assessment to the students and to help them comprehend the problems, the difficulties and the contradictions that lies within the process of evaluating children’s performance. Another goal of this course is to teach qualitative forms of evaluation to the students in order to incorporate educational and pedagogical criteria in their assessment tasks.

Syllabus

The current course context includes a number of topics concerning assessment and the latest developments in the international educational settings such as, the definition and description of assessment models and typologies, external and internal evaluation, self-evaluation of school units, teacher work assessment, historical route of assessment in the greek education and methods of assessment. Other key issues discussed in this course refer to international educational assessment research projects (PISA, TIMMS) and to evaluation of student performance as a mean of assessing education in a local and national level. The current lesson also focuses on topics like the functions, various forms and criteria of assessing children’s performance, the advantages and disadvantages of applying grades and tests, validity and reliability issues concerning assessment, types of exams like written and oral examinations, types and methods of questions and alternative forms of assessing children like portfolio, descriptive assessment. Finally a historical trip around the course of assessment in the Greek primary school concludes the context of this lesson.
