Special Topic in Demography: Spatial Dimensions of Demographic Phenomena


The course aims to provide specialized knowledge to students who already have basic knowledge in demographic analysis and want to emphasize in spatial aspects and territorial impact of demographic phenomena trends.


Objectives

The course aims to equip the students with specialized knowledge and skills regarding population and demographic analysis at different spatial scales, allowing them to study demographic phenomena in depth by taking into account the specificities of differentiated spatial scales.


Prerequisites

Successful completion of the course of "Demography"(DPRD curriculum).


Syllabus

The course syllabus include: - A brief overview on the basic methods and techniques of demographic analysis - A critical presentation of online population-demographic databases; emphasis is given to quality and availability of post-war population and demographic data regarding Greece and sub-national spatial scales; as well as to problems raised by their uncritical use. - Basic techniques for the analysis of population-demographic data at sub-national scales - Techniques of demographic projections at national and regional level. Prerequisites, assumptions, methods and techniques, the possibilities, the limits of demographic projections and their central role in planning. Finally, students who attend the course will choose a subject/case study to be analyzed in depth under the supervision and assistance of lecturers.
