Foundations and Retaining Structures

The course covers the field of the analysis and design of foundations (shallow and deep) and retaining structures. The classical theories of soil mechanics, like bearing capacity and soil pressures, that are key components of the response and design of foundations and retaining structures are presented. In each foundation and retaining problem the commonly used conventional and rather simplified approaches, based on the limit equilibrium theory, are presented and then the application of numerical methods is introduced. Typical examples are given to assess the advantages of both approaches.
