Language disabilities- bilingualism and multilinguistic environment

This course is the basic introductory course to the study of learning disabilities, bilingualism and their multilingual reporting environment. This course aims to introduce students to the definition of learning disabilities, the characteristics and the theories related to them. Also, through the course, the students are training in interventions of reinforcement of reading ability, recognition of words in writing speech, editing of written text and development relations between reading-writing skills, and strategies of studing. The last aim of the course is: - the understanding by the students of the types and the tools of the assessment in the place of a multidisciplinary team, multiple interventional treatment in the fields of learning, behavior and development of the spoken and written speach, - to familiarize students with international education systems for children with dyslexia and bilingual children.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course the students will be able to: - Understand the issues of learning disabilities and their reference areas - Gain interpretation and intervention capacities in learning disabilities - Gain critical thinking, flexibility and inventiveness on the interventions in the full range of learning disabilities - Understand genetic, neurophysiological, psycho-emotional and socio-cultural mechanisms and their effects during the appearence and managing of learning difficulties - Understand the terms and conceptual specificities of the object of Learning Disabilities, bilingual and multilingual environment - become familiar with the assessment and diagnosis techniques of the learning disabilities symptoms in order to outline the right profile of learning disabilities - become familiar with rehabilitaion interventions related with learning disabilities and to adopt the appropriate application techniques

Learning disabilities: introductory lesson, the lesson objectives, specific developmental disorders, pervasive developmental disorders, developmental language disorders, general and specific learning disabilities, interdisciplinary approach to learning disabilities, necessity of diagnosis of learning disabilities. Characteristics of learning disabilities, learning disabilities and neuropsychological agents, learning disabilities and genetic factors, learning disabilities and mental disorders The need for early diagnosis and intervention of learning disabilities, age assessment periods, learning disabilities characteristics in preschool, school and adolescence periods, the environment of the adolescent. The school curriculum, appropriate preparation procedures - aid study approaches: the case study of Norman, writing samples of children with learning disabilities.
