Introduction to Computers and Applications


The module is an introduction of first-year students of the Department of Economics to computer systems and applications as the main tools for data processing. Technology augments human capabilities and computers are introduced as mind expanding tools. The history of computer systems and vintage methods for processing economic data are presented in brief. The logic of arithmetic systems and number representation is explained, with emphasis to the binary system, as well as conversion methods between different systems. Data processing methods are analyzed using spreadsheet software (MS excel) and programming languages (python).


Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: - Understand the importance of computer systems in Economics - Describe the concepts of hardware, software and applications - Accomplish conversions and operations in different arithmetic systems - Process data using spreadsheet software (MS Excel) - Process data using programming languages (Python)
