This course provides the basic knowledge for the donation of hematopoietic stem cells and bone marrow transplantation. It also provides the information on whom and how one can become a donor, makes a detailed report on Volunteer Donor Registries including KEDMOP and further highlights the need to broaden the Greek Donor Registry. Finally, it covers the donation process, the preparation of the donor and the collection procedures of the graft both from bone marrow and the peripheral blood.
Upon completion of this course the student will have a complete picture on the Blood Cell and Bone Marrow Donation. More specifically, at the end of this course the student: 1. Will be able to understand the Blood Cell and Bone Marrow Donation, the bone marrow transplantation, the collection of Blood cells and the Volunteer Bone Marrow Donor Registries. 2. Will be able to describe the procedures of volunteer bone marrow donation, to understand the process of registration of new donors in KEDMOP and also to participate as a KEDMOP volunteer in order to inform and recruit bone marrow volunteer donors. 3. Will be properly informed of Blood Cell and Bone Marrow Donation as well as of the need to increase the national pool of donors.
