Stereochemistry: Chirality, assigning configurations using the R,S system, optical activity, Fischer projections, diastereomers, meso compounds. Reaction Mechanisms, Substitution, Eliminination, Addition Reactions. Hydrocarbons: Alkanes, cycloalkanes, alkenes, alkadienes. Aromatic hydrocarbons. The structure of benzene. The aromatic electrophilic substitution. The aromatic character. Alkyl halides. Nucleophilic substitution of alkyl halides, SN1 and SN2 mechanisms. Organometallic compounds. Chemical reagents and labware. Separation and purification techniques . Methodology for carrying out organic reactions, cookbook procedure laboratory, with emphasis on product yield and purity.
