Population and Migration

This course aims to provide the basic knowledge for the analysis of migratory flows, the two-way relationship between migration and population concentration in various spatial scales as well as, to discuss the relations between geographical mobility and socioeconomic variables. After successful completion of this course the student will acquire the basic knowledge of methods and techniques for the study of geographical mobility and will be able to use them critically by analyzing available data. Additionally, the student will be capable of understanding the interplay between geographic mobility and external demographic socioeconomic variables; variables that vary considerably depending on the test environment / analysis scale This course aims to equip the students with: • the ability to search for data, analysis and synthesis, • decision-making capacity based on research results, • the ability to self-development and work in a future interdisciplinary work environment, • the ability to advance free, creative and inductive thinking, through the development of critical skills, as well as the necessary quantitative background of understanding complicated relationships linking the various phenomena.

Internal Combustion Engines

Management and Simulation of Water Supply Systems

The course deals with the management and simulation methods of water supply systems. It includes the analysis of the water distribution networks and the evaluation and assessment methods of their operating level. In detail the course deals with the analysis of the Water Balance, the Performance Indicators, the Non-Revenue Water and the methods and techniques for its confrontation. The water audit tools are presented as well as the tools for the distribution network hydraulic simulation. The integrated decision support systems are also presented. The course includes the analysis of the economic level of leakage and its calculation methodology. Finally, it includes a proposed socially fair cost allocation of the water balance components to the water distribution network users.

Students are taught heuristic and exact solution approaches and algorithms through small, medium and large scale examples. Finally, through detailed toy examples from the bibliography as well as real case examples from the industry the teaching focuses on modeling technics. Students get experience on modeling approaches in order to get the ability to develop robust and compact mathematical models for real case studies.

Dynamics

The course is involved with the study and description of dynamic motions of bodies subject to external forces. The kinematics of a point are developed, where the motion is studied without taking into account the forces that cause it, and the relative translational motion is studied. Next, the kinetics of point particles are studied, where the motion is related to forces through Newton/Euler laws of motion, the principles of thrust and momentum, and the principles of work and energy. Next the analysis is generalized to the kinematics of rigid bodies and the following motions are studied : translational motion, rotation around a steady axis, planar motion, rotation around steady point, general spatial motion, and relative motions with respect to rotating coordinate system. The kinetics of rigid bodies is developed through Euler equations, principles of thrust and momentum, and principles of work and energy.
