The concept of the communication medium is analysed according to media philosophy, with emphasis on the development of human communicational ability from the point of view of individual development and cultural structure. In the first part of the course the influence of media on interpersonal communication is explored with reference to each stage of human communication from primary orality to the typographic stage. In the second part o the course the focus is on secondary orality: the mutual relations of different contemporary mass media (from the optical telegraph to the Internet) and their integration in the respective historic context. The objective of the course is the understanding of media technological development of the media and their potential cultural consequences. Literary and film sources belonging to the science fiction genre are also referred.
