Spatial Patial Planning Studio:Thessaloniki Metropolitan Area


The Spatial Planning Studio concerns the formulation of a Strategic Plan for the Metropolitan Area of Thessaloniki. The students taking the course will acquire knowledge of: (a) the methodology of making strategic plans for spatial interventions, (b) the existing strategic plans for the wider metropolitan area, and (c) the concepts and mechanisms of spatial development and organization at the Metropolitan scale. The course includes lectures from members of the teaching team and guest experts on theoretical and practical aspects of planning as well as presentations by student groups. The project involves drafting a strategic plan for the development of the wider region of Thessaloniki.


Objectives

The educational goals of the course refer to the understanding of concepts, mechanisms and processes of strategic spatial planning. The successful completion of the course implies that the students will be able to analyze and handle related issues and to coordinate the drafting of a strategic plan for spatial interventions in the Metropolitan scale. Students will also be able to formulate, to present and to espousing their views in written and spoken word.

Syllabus

The course includes lectures from members of the teaching team and guest experts on theoretical and practical aspects of planning as well as presentations by student groups. The project involves drafting a strategic plan for the development of the wider region of Thessaloniki. The analysis relies upon studies and proposals for the regulation and development of Thessaloniki that have been drafted by the Organization for The Master Plan and Environmental Protection and by other agencies as well as upon complementary data and information that are available on the support online courses system of AUTH. The completion of project work includes the formulation of a strategic framework for interventions and its presentation in texts, diagrams and maps. The evaluation of students is based upon participation in interim presentations and the submission and presentation of the final project.
