Quality Control and Technology of Metallic Materials

Metals and alloys for mechanical structures, tools, devices, molds, machine parts, coatings, welds. Correlation of material structure, material behavior (properties) and structure intervention methods (thermal, machining and other processes). Changes and modifications of the material properties prior to, during and after each phase of processing. Standardization (standards, specifications, regulations, codes of practice): Properties of materials and methods of measurements (tests). Instruments, measuring devices (tests) and calibration methods. Materials, application methods (treatments), and statistical analysis of results.

Objectives

This course aims to introduce students to the basic concepts of Technology of Metallic Materials. After completion of the course, students will be able to distinguish and use the concepts related to quality, to identify and classify the major metals and their alloys, based on their chemical composition and determine their properties. During the laboratory session, students will be able to characterize the microstructure of metallic materials and to measure, compare and evaluate the critical mechanical properties, using standard methodologies. They will design and implement thermal treatments, to improve the mechanical properties of metallic materials and choosing materials and their respective thermal treatments for specific engineering applications. Finally, the course aims to teach the importance of quality in every phase of the production process and the use, maintenance, removal / recycling of mechanical metal objects.
