The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the Department of animal production and Aquaculture Science in the science of animal production.

Syllabus

Social and economic importance of animal production, o other and additional branch of Agriculture. Benefits from the breeding of farm animals to humans. Effectiveness of animal in relation to crop production. Contribution of animal production to solve the world food problem. Elements of the global livestock production. Data from the livestock production in Greece. Trends for the future development of animal production. Origin, katoikidiopoiisi and evolution of farm animals. Changes suffered by farm animals during the course of katoikidiopoiisis. Classification of livestock breeds. A description of the main tribes in cattle, sheep, goats and pigs. Importance for the conservation of rare breeds.
