Radiation and Radiation Protection

The course contains basic knowledge for ionizing and not ionizing radiation. The main chapters refer to the nature and origin of radiation, the production, transmission, detection and impacts of radiation on health and environment as well as the protection methods. The course includes theory and lab.

Objectives

On successful completion of this module the student will be able to: 1. Know the basic kinds of radiation and their origin sources. 2. Evaluate the effects of radiation on humans according to its characteristics (intensity, frequency, energy etc). 3. Be familiar with the operating principles of standard equipment which is used for radiation detection and be able to use the devices. 4. Choose the appropriate methods for radiation prevention and protection. 5. Know the basic radioactive waste sources and the radioactive waste management methods. The items 1-4 concern both the ionizing and nonionizing radiation.
