Synthetic Chemistry and Modification Methods of Polymers


Synthesis of linear and non-linear block copolymers with various methods. Methods of chemical modification and molecular characterization of polymers.


Objectives

The overall aims and objectives are to understand basic concepts, meanings concerning polymer synthesis and modification methods for possible applications in various sectors. For the undergraduate student it is necessary to have followed the Attendance Attendance of the compulsory class of Polymers and basic Organic Chemistry knowledge. After completion the student is able to further understand issues on Polymer Science.


Prerequisites

Attendance of the compulsory class of Polymers and basic Organic Chemistry knowledge. Suggested classes that should be attended: CHEMISTRY II ETY202 POLYMEIRC MATERIALS ETY703.


Syllabus

Synthesis of linear block polymers via: anionic polymerization (ΑΒ, ΑΒΑ, ΑΒΑ΄, ΑΒC, ABCD), cationic polymerization (AB, ABA, ABC), living radical polymerization (ΑΒ, ΑΒΑ, ΑΒC, ABCD), group transfer polymerization (ΑΒ, ΑΒΑ, ABC), ring opening metathesis polymerization (ΑΒ, ΑΒΑ), Ziegler-Natta polymerization, by combining various polymerization methods (ΑΒ, ΑΒΑ). Synthesis of non-linear polymers. Molecular characterization of the synthesized materials.
