Power Electronics I (Open Course)


1) Introduction to Power Electronics a) Power electronics converters topologies, power electronics semiconductor devices (Power diode, Thyristor, GTO Thyristor, Power MOSFET, IGBT etc.), protection and cooling of devices. b) Analysis of static as well as dymanic performance of thyristors, firing angle control circuit of thyristor. 2) AC-AC Converters (AC Voltage Regulators) a) Single phase converter with antiparallel thyristors (TRIAC), extraction of voltage and current waveforms, firing angle limits, soft starters. b) Three phase converter with antiparallel thyristor, extraction of voltage and current waveforms, soft starters, Speed control of induction motors. c) Active, Reactive and Apparent power, Power Factor definition. 3) AC-DC Converters (Rectifiers) a) Single phase rectifier with one thyristor, smoothing inductors and capacitors, extraction of voltage and current waveforms, active, reactive and apparent input power, power factor, harmonics. b) Single phase rectifier with two thyristors and center tapped transformer, smoothing inductors and capacitors, extraction of voltage and current waveforms, active, reactive and apparent input power, power factor, harmonics. c) Single phase rectifier with four thyristors (full bridge), smoothing inductors and capacitors, extraction of voltage and current waveforms, active, reactive and apparent input power, power factor, harmonics, commutation phenomenon. d) Three phase Three pulse thyristor rectifier, smoothing inductor, extraction of voltage and current waveforms, active, reactive and apparent input power, power factor, harmonics, commutation phenomenon. e) Three phase Six pulse thyristor rectifier, smoothing inductor, extraction of voltage and current waveforms, active, reactive and apparent input power, power factor, harmonics, commutation phenomenon. f) Speed and Torque control of DC Machines.


Objectives

Introduction to power converters circuits, comprehension of basic and advanced power converters topologies (AC Voltage Regulators and Rectifiers).
