Aggelos Sikelianos and his time.


The poetical, theatrical and critical work of Sikelianos is closely examined, in parallel with the cultural environment of his time, taking into concern the social and historical conditions of the decades in which he lived and wrote.


Objectives

Encoureging of the students' critical thinking. Learning of ways through which they can approach the syntactically complicated and often obscure poetry of Sikelianos. Understanding of the relations between the work of Sikelianos and the historical kai political conditions,as well as cultural decelopments of his time. Metrical, formal, ideological etc.analysis of Sikelianos' poetry and placing of his work on the broader map of modern Greek poetry. Examination of the relation of his poetry with Greek poetic tradition. The infuence he excersised on his poetic antecedents.

Syllabus

-Introductory remarks about the literary developments of the years during which he lived and wrote (end of 19th century and first half of 20th century). Examination of the historical and socio-political condidions of that period. -First poems of Sikelianos and their influences by european literary currents.. -First period of his creative development (paganistic phase) -Second period of his poetic development (christian myth and Delphic Idea). -Third period of his poetic development (philosophical tendencies and more humble poetic voice). -His lyrical drama -His delphic lectures and his critical essays.
